WHO THE HELL ARE HIS LAST VOYAGE?
Hailing from rainy Brighton, England, His Last Voyage take a unique approach to the stagnating genre of Post-Brexit Post-Punk, fusing complicated time signatures with poetic spoken word performances, exploring grisly historical tableaus, from the execution of King Charles I to a mutinous 19th century Arctic expedition. The four-piece consists of Tom Chiplin on bass, vocals and songwriting duties, Owen Flood on drums, Oscar Garvey on keys and Joe Court on guitars. Inspired by artists like Black Country, New Road and Black Midi, Chiplin takes a unique approach to his vocals, using spoken word and improvised melodies to perform his often abstract and impenetrable lyrics over off-kilter and dissonant instrumentals. Seamlessly between tracks, the band performs avant-garde improvisations that bring to mind Miles Davis’ electric output, blending the boundaries between composed and unplanned music in a spontaneous and exciting way similar bands in the scene refuse to take the risk in attempting. Lyrically, the group explores historical characters, from King Charles I to a mutinous 19th Century arctic sailor, telling grisly tales of war, betrayal and death in their uniquely poetic way.
